Working Equitation Clinics with Kimberly Jarvis

Working Equitation is one of the world’s newest equine sports.  Competitions testing the functionality and performance of horse and rider are taking place in Europe and more recently South America since 1995.  Over the past few years in the United States, demonstrations and clinics are leading to open competition in this up and coming discipline! Working Equitation is an exciting way to test the horse, his functionality and practical use with work in dressage, negotiating obstacles, and with cattle.  The horse and rider are often dressed in the native tack and attire of their country or primary discipline.

There are four phases of Working Equitation at the International level.  The competitions being held in the United States compete three phases. The first phase is a dressage test.  The horse and rider are given a sequence of maneuvers to perform in the given order at any place within the designated parameters.  At this time there are three levels in which to compete, the upper levels demand flying changes and pirouettes and are done solely at walk and canter. The horses are judged on their obedience and ability to execute the required movements without hesitation or fault.

The second and third phases of Working Equitation focus on the obstacle course. The obstacles consist of things that may be found in everyday working environments, including crossing bridges, jumping barrels, passing through gaits and other obstacles that Americans often use in their Gymkhana events.  Phase two judges the horse and rider for accuracy and skill while negotiating the obstacles.  In phase three, the course is executed for speed. The fourth phase is not encountered in the United States at this time.  It is a team test of cow-cutting and penning.

Riding Lusitano horses and competing in native attire, the Portuguese riders have dominated the European and World Championships in Working Equitation.  The Portuguese attribute their success to generations of using horses to work cattle and perform agricultural duties, as well as to the horses themselves.  Their success in Working Equitation is proof of their skill.

Dressage at Devon 2011

Congratulations to our 2011 Iberian Horse Champion Bernardo OSF and Reserve Isidora SFI!

Dressage at Devon will be celebrtaing its 36th anniversary this year! In 2010 we are excited to see breed classes for the Iberian and Spanish Horses! In 2011 we will again bring you a breed class for the Iberian horse open to all IALHA registered horses, including purebred Andalusians or Lusitanos as well as Iberian Warmbloods, Azteca's, Spanish Norman's and any other cross registered with the IALHA! In our own breed shows it is important to recognize the individuality of these horses, however at a breed show the size of Devon, they are a division of their own competing against the different Warmbloods and Sporthorses! We hope to see you there, preferably with your Iberian horse!

Isidora SFI (Dichoso Uno X Cassopia (Dutch WB)) competing at Devon 2009!

Thank you!
